The inaugural Motor Show EAST took place 2-3 June 2018 at Newmarket Racecourse. The event was proudly sponsored by Mattioli Woods plc and Greene King with their Old Speckled Hen brand. The skies were threatening all sorts of unpleasant weather on Saturday, but Sunday couldn't have been better.
We were honoured to have the British GT Championship driver Graham Davidson with us for the whole weekend as part of the Mattioli Woods plc display in the Millennium Grandstand. He even brought his Aston Martin V12 Vantage along with him, fresh from a podium finish at Snetterton the weekend before and visitors were even allowed to sit in the car for photos.
We were very pleased to welcome dealers and franchises from the region; Cambridge MG, Crown Garage Honda, EMG Kia, Cambridge Tesla, Rawlinson Mitsubishi, Cambridge Audi, Cambridge Subaru, Cambridge Ducati & EMG Mazda, along with specialists such as; CBS Automotive, Torque & Talk Owners Club, Wallis & Son, Jules Sturgess Automotive & Van System.
The collection of exotic cars was impressive; a black Porsche Carrera GT, a spectacular Aston Martin Vanquish Red Arrows Special Edition (1 of only 10!), a CAV GT40, two Ferraris, a whole brace of Aston Martins, a Jaguar E-Type FHC, two TVRs, several Lotus examples and a Jensen Interceptor!
We learned that a Tesla Model X could 'dance', sort of, much to the amusement of our visitors on Sunday. Two talented visitors drove the fastest lap times on our driving challenge simulators and won a karting experience for 4 at Red Lodge Karting.
We all had a great time, welcomed thousands of wonderful visitors and walked so many miles every day that we are seriously considering investing in a fleet of Segways for next year! Our sincere thanks to all those involved, the exhibitors, the sponsors, the venue team, the food caterers, the attraction stall holders and traders. But most of all, a huge thank you to the visitors that came along to the show and gave us such positive feedback. It is for you specifically that we will return next year, bigger and better.
On behalf of Red Dot Events and Iliffe Media, thank you. Thank you all.
Torque & Talk is an exciting new car enthusiasts club in Cambridgeshire. Their first meet was on a very rainy day in April where they welcomed approximately 60 cars and owners to a business park in Waterbeach.
Founder Charlie, a Lotus and Porsche driver himself said, "Torque & Talk is a unique approach to a car meet; gathering local communities who share a passion for cars and enjoy networking."
We are really pleased to be working with Torque & Talk who will be bringing several members along to Motor Show EAST, displaying cars such as an Aston Martin DBS, several Lotus cars, including an Elan Sprint, Esprits and an Evora, Porsches, TVRs and even a Healey Enigma V8.

We are very pleased to announce that this wonderful gold Ford Thunderbird from 1961 will be shown at Motor Show EAST 2-3 June 2018. This particular car was one of the official Pace Cars for the Indy 500. Out of the 34 produced, it is believed that there are only a handful of these pace cars surviving in the world, this one being the only one in the UK.
It has a 6.4 litre V8 with an electric roof. It has been used many times as a course car at Goodwood for the Revival meeting every September. Some of the photos were taken at Goodwood. It has been driven by Lord March (Now the Duke of Richmond) and Buzz Aldrin, the US astronaut, has ridden in the car with Lord March - see the photo below.
Ford Motor Company was given the honor of providing the Pace Car for the 1961 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The Thunderbird, with its unmistakably new styling was the obvious choice at the time. This would be the 50th (Golden) Anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 Race, although it was not actually the 50th running of the race; during World War II the race was suspended. Ford would provide a total of thirty-four 1961 Thunderbird convertibles, including one Official Pace Car, one alternate Official Pace Car, and thirty two official "500" festival cars.
All would be painted a unique shade of gold that was not available on any other car, not even other Thunderbirds. All of the cars featured white convertible tops and either black leather or black vinyl interior trim, Firestone brand whitewall tires (they sponsored the race), rear fender shields, and 3.00:1 rear axles.
The 32 Festival Cars fulfilled their official capacity by appearing in the parade the week before the race. They also carried the race car drivers around the track during introductions held before the race. The 32 festival cars plus the alternate pace car represented the 33 drivers that would start the race.
It is now considered to be one of the most fascinating and historically significant Fords of all time. In fact, you could even buy a 1:24 die cast model of this very special edition of the Thunderbird.
